EFCC behaving like politicians, says Basorun, ex-Lagos PDP boss

For the rule of law and the future of democracy to be secure in Nigeria, the excesses of the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC), must be curtailed.
This was the verdict of the first chairman of the Lagos chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Mr Olorunfunmi Basorun.

In an interview with Daily Sun on Tuesday shortly before he dumped the party for the Action Congress (AC), Basorun who is also a lawyer charged all politicians to imbibe the spirit of democracy and the rule of law.

He pointedly accused the EFCC of acting in manners that suggest that they are politicians by flagrantly disobeying court orders and disrespecting the office of the Attorney-General of the Federation. 'We all have to be democrats, we have to be tolerant; when there's a court ruling, we must respect it. Whoever disrespects the rule of law must be dealt with," he said.

On the simmering crisis of confidence between the EFCC and the AGF over alleged money laundering preferred against ex-governor Orji Uzor Kalu, he said, 'the attorney-general is the chief law officer of the country. 'EFCC should abide by the court ruling, if there is any disagreement, they should sort it out now. Because they are the loudest, they are behaving like politicians.

'They should do their jobs properly and believe that whatever criminal prosecutions, is under the attorney general. Whether the man is young, old or average, the positions of the attorney general, as the chief prosecutor should be respected, " he said.
